Students earn three units of USC elective credit upon successful completion of this college-level course.
The USC Pre-College "Discover Engineering" program offers high school students an immersive, four-week, on-campus experience exploring diverse engineering disciplines. Participants engage in academic lectures and hands-on projects, applying design thinking and the engineering design process to real-world problems. Activities include building and launching rockets, programming robots and sensor devices, designing and building bridges, and utilizing 3D printers and AI. Students also learn to conduct research, write research papers, and present their project outcomes. The program aims to provide a preview of college-level engineering studies, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Field trips to relevant sites around Los Angeles offer insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by professional engineers.
Participants attend class from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, with breaks for lunch or field trips in Los Angeles.
This program is ideal for high schoolers who are considering studying engineering in college and want a preview of the academic and practical experience.
