About this camp

The UCLA Astronomy Live! Summer Observing Workshop offers high school students an introduction to scientific research through observational astronomy. Led by UCLA astronomy graduate students, this 9-week program focuses on hands-on activities, data analysis, and scientific presentation. Participants will conduct a research project on astrophysical objects using real data from telescopes worldwide and in space. The workshop aims to develop analytical thinking, problem-solving, and presentation skills, providing a concrete research experience for students interested in pursuing science in college or as a career.

Students will learn about observational astronomy, data reduction, and basic Python coding to turn raw data into full-color images. The program culminates in a 5-10 minute presentation of their research findings. Computer access is provided, and the program emphasizes making astronomy accessible to all participants.
