Students earn 4 units of UCLA college credit while creating portfolio-ready work and exploring the ethical and social dimensions of AI in art.
The UCLA Arts High School Summer Institute: Artificial Intelligence and Art Summer Institute is a three-week residential pre-college program for high school students aged 15-18. Students will explore the intersection of AI and visual arts, learning to use automated algorithms for creative expression. The curriculum includes short lectures, discussions, workshops, and feedback sessions, culminating in a final exhibition of portfolio-ready work. Students will engage with cutting-edge generative AI, develop their unique artistic style with AI assistance, and understand the future of digital creation. The program also delves into the societal impacts of AI, including power relationships, inequities, and biases embedded within the technology. Students will complete three exercises and a final project, receiving 4 units of college credit.
A typical day includes individual and group warm-up exercises, presentations on the history of AI in art, discussions about work-in-process, tutorials, studio time for individual work and one-on-one feedback, and group critiques.
This program is ideal for high school students with a serious interest in experimental media arts and a motivation to study and work hard, who want to explore the fusion of art and technology.
