Students earn 4 units of college credit and create portfolio-ready work while exploring cutting-edge generative AI under the guidance of software artists.
The UCLA Arts Artificial Intelligence and Art Summer Institute is a three-week residential pre-college program for high school students interested in the intersection of art and AI. Students will explore the possibilities and social impacts of creating art with AI software. The curriculum includes short lectures, discussions, workshops, and feedback sessions. Participants will learn to integrate AI into their creative practice, explore various AI modalities across different media, and develop a critical perspective on technology. The institute culminates in a final exhibition where students showcase portfolio-ready work, earning 4 units of college credit. No prior programming or machine learning knowledge is required.
A typical day includes individual and group warm-up exercises, presentations on the history of AI in art, discussions, tutorials, studio time for individual work and one-on-one instructor meetings, and group critiques.
This program is ideal for high school students aged 15-18 with a serious interest in art and technology, who are motivated to explore the creative potential and social implications of AI in visual arts.
