About this camp

The Summer High School Intensive in Next-Generation Engineering (SHINE) at USC offers a competitive seven-week immersive research experience for high school students passionate about STEM. Participants join a USC Viterbi professor's research team, gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge engineering fields such as biomedicine, robotics, and aerospace. Students receive personalized mentorship from professors and Ph.D. students or post-doctoral researchers, focusing on experimental lab work or computational research. The program emphasizes experiential learning, allowing students to apply STEM knowledge to real-world problems and develop valuable practical skills. Beyond research, SHINE fosters a close-knit community through weekly activities that introduce practices and ethics of creating new knowledge, social and intellectual networking, and college preparation tips. Students also develop scientific communication skills, culminating in a poster session where they present their research findings to faculty, peers, and family. The program aims to empower students to become confident and capable contributors to high-impact research, preparing them for future studies and careers in engineering.
