UCLA Engineering Design: The Internet of Things

Students will receive a state-of-the-art IoT platform to own for future experiments and gain hands-on experience with machine learning on a platform developed by UCLA.

🔥 High School 🕒 3-week Pre-College Program In-person Beginner-friendly

About this camp

The UCLA Engineering Design: The Internet of Things program offers high school students a rapid and in-depth introduction to machine learning for IoT systems. Participants engage in hands-on engineering design projects directly on the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering's IoT platform. The curriculum covers an introduction to microsensors, fundamentals of machine learning and neural networks, and creative applications like motion pattern recognition for autonomous driving. Students gain practical experience through coding sessions, interactive workshops, and extensive lab hours, including an introduction to C programming. The program culminates in an open-ended final project where students innovate and implement their own IoT system, accompanied by a report and a brief video presentation.

Students will develop skills in designing and building electrical circuits, programming, and computer-aided design. They will also interact with industry experts and researchers who are pioneers in the fields of microsensors, IoT, and machine learning. Upon completion, students will have a foundational understanding of IoT technology and machine learning, practical experience with a state-of-the-art IoT platform (which they get to keep), and experience in technical presentations.

What a typical day looks like

A typical day consists of a combination of lectures covering theoretical concepts, hands-on technical activities in the lab supervised by TAs and mentors, and a recreation hour.
